Carson City is the state capital of Nevada, founded in 1858 and named for legendary mountain man Kit Carson. The city covers 145 square miles of land east of Lake Tahoe, home to a population of roughly 55,000 people under the motto, “Proud of its Past, Confident of its Future.”
The town began as a stopover for settlers en route to California, then developed into a city with the Comstock Lode silver strike of 1859. From there Carson City’s population began to grow. It was made the permanent capital when Nevada became a state in 1864. Historic points of interest today in Carson City include the Nevada State Capitol building, completed in 1871, as well as the Nevada State Railroad Museum. Carson City offers a variety of parks and recreation, while close to several ski resorts.
